Top Gear Live In Johannesburg This Week

Posted on 19. Feb, 2010 by admin in Top Gear

Top Gear is by far the most popular car magazine show to ever grace television screens worldwide. The controversial and entertaining show has been transformed into a live performance show and is entertaining audiences worldwide as the crew move from country to country. After a successful show in Cape Town, Johannesburg is the next lucky city to be graced with the show’s presence this week. But what makes this show so exceptional and unique? Let’s take a look, shall we?

First of all, the presenters of the show are definitely the core of what makes this such an entertaining television insert. Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond are at the centre of the show and it’s their love/hate relationship that makes BBC Top Gear so popular. Clarkson is well known for his razor sharp wit, humour and total ignorance for television rules and regulations. His sometimes abrasive personality is well complimented by the slightly “straight up” personality of Richard Hammond who also has a quick-fire sense of humour that constantly challenges Clarkson.

The presenters are not only likeable television personalities; they genuinely are extremely knowledgeable when it comes to the auto industry. The show’s unique angle on approaching car reviews is a lot more entertaining that what most car magazine shows have offered in the past. Honest opinions are given regardless of which manufacturers might be offended. The cars are assessed by creating imaginative races between the relevant presenters and involve all modes of transport from trains to airplanes. One of the most memorable Top Gear episodes saw Clarkson driving a Bugatti Veyron from Italy to the UK, whilst Hammond and James May (the shows 3rd presenter) took a small passenger plane flight in the same direction. Definitely a Top Gear episode not to have been missed.

The other factor that has created a continuing stir for the show is the introduction of “The Stig” who is rumoured to be an ex-professional racing driver who often tests cars around the Top Gear track to see how well they perform. The catch is that the “Stig’s” identity is one of television’s best kept secrets. Many have guessed that the man under the white helmet is Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher or Alain Prost, but no identity has ever been confirmed. What a legend.

The MPH is a really a revved-up version on the television show. The Top Gear Season of live performances is presented by the same presenters as the television show and boasts 16 various stunts and performances during the 90 minute duration of the show. Many regular occurrences from the TV show, such as the “Stig’s” lap around the track and are included in the show which is carried out in true Top Gear Fashion, with the motto being “ambitious but not always successful”.

If you’re in Jo’burg this week, be sure to check out Top Gear MPH Live which is co-hosted by South Africa’s very own car enthusiast, Sasha Martinengo.
